Correct driving skills are a requirement for safety and to complete the task. Driving also requires paying attention, communication, planning, making quick decisions, reading road signs and signals, obeying traffic laws, and maintaining awareness of your surroundings.
1. HANDLING YOUR VEHICLE.
Every driver has a unique style of driving that they are comfortable with. However, safe driving requires reducing your speed if you can not see what is ahead of you, scanning the road to anticipate problems, and preparing for unexpected situations. Driving too slow or too fast can reduce your control of the vehicle.
2. SIGNALING.
Before changing lanes, taking turns, or entering traffic, you should signal your intentions. If another driver does not see or understand your signal, he may cause an accident. Safe driving requires that you are aware of where your vehicle is located in the lane. 5. SPEED.
Keeping a safe speed is essential to maintaining distance awareness and avoiding crashes. Driving too slowly can cause you to be hit from behind, and going too fast can cause you to lose control in a collision or unexpected conditions. According to the Centers for Disease Control, speed is one of the most common factors in traffic fatalities.
6. SPACE UTILIZATION.
A driver must maintain awareness of the space around his vehicle and respond to any close calls with proper braking or steering. A driver making a lane change, U-turn, or pulling into traffic must realize that there may be other vehicles he needs to avoid.
